Household Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous waste includes everyday materials found in a home that are combustible, reactive, explosive, corrosive, or toxic when managed improperly such as cleaners, pesticides, or paint. Disposing of this type of waste can result in a dangerous situation if the materials are disposed of in the trash and are inadvertently mixed in the trash can or once collected in a garbage truck. The safest way to dispose of these materials is by taking them to a permanent facility or a special, one-day event where household hazardous waste is collected.

H-GAC's Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Transportation and Disposal Contract

H-GAC has contracted with Clean Earth for the collection, transportation and disposal of Household Hazardous Waste within the 13-county H-GAC region. The contract will cover both permanent Household Hazardous Waste facilities and one-day collection events within the thirteen counties.

Future Household Hazardous Waste Request For Proposal Opportunities

Use our sign-up form if your company would like to be notified of the next opportunity to submit a response to a Request for Proposals (RFP) and become H-GAC’s contracted vendor for Household Hazardous Waste for collection, transportation, and disposal.

Collection Events

Visit the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) website for Household Hazardous Waste events in your area.

There are several possible methods for Household Hazardous Waste collection: one day collection events, permanent collection sites, mobile collection units or curbside collection.

It is important that volunteers working collection events have the proper training:

Financial Assistance for Collection Events

Household Hazardous Waste collection programs may be sponsored either by local government, public interest groups or private firms. Financial support may be obtained from a variety of sources that can include: local or regional chemical manufacturers, corporations, civic groups or grants. The TCEQ sponsors a Municipal Solid Waste Program through H-GAC, in which Household Hazardous Waste program and projects are eligible for funding.
