IH 10/FM 1409 Overpass
Chambers County
IH 10
FM 1409
The facility had 124 crashes, 1 serious injuries and 0 fatalities during the period from 2015 to 2017. Improving congestion on this facility could save users in excess of 35,000 hours of travel time per lane-mile. Congestion is adversely affecting the travel time and reliability for freight movement. The project is on the National Highway Freight Network. The truck volume on the facility is roughly 15,389 trucks per day and this represents 20.6% percent of the facility's AADT. A new location section of FM 1409 from FM 565 in Old River-Winfree south to IH-10 and from IH-10 south to west of Cove will begin construction soon. The north (of IH-10) and south (of IH-10) sections of FM 1409 will be separated by IH-10 and will lack connection.
Construct overpass on IH-10 for future FM 1409; Grade separation only at IH-10.
The purpose of this project is to reduce crashes, serious injuries and fatalities; reduce congestion on the facility and improve the reliability of peak-period travel times; reduce congestion and improve travel time reliability for freight movement on this facility. The purpose of the project is also to connect the northern and southern sections of the future FM 1409 project by elevating IH-10 at FM 1409 and constructing an FM 1409 underpass at IH-10.

Various locations of IH-10 between SH 61 and Winnie were covered with flood waters from Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The roadway was impassable and was closed for three days while waiting for the water to recede and debris to be removed.
