Houston, TX – The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) is pleased to announce the election of new officers for its 2025 board of directors. Earlier today, January 10, 2025, the organization held its annual State of the Region event and annual H-GAC General Assembly Meeting to swear in 2025 board officers. The Honorable Judge Jay Knight of Liberty County will preside over the board as chair throughout 2025.
“As chairperson of the H-GAC Board of Directors, Judge Knight has the important task of leading the agency and its advisory committees to address our region’s most pressing issues including transportation, healthcare, and workforce readiness to name a few,” said Chuck Wemple, executive director of the regional planning organization. “Judge Knight will preside over our monthly board meetings where our member governments and school districts meet to discuss and address the challenges we face throughout our 13-county region.”
Colorado County Judge Ty Prause will serve as vice-chairperson of the board alongside Judge Knight and city of Pattison Mayor Pro-Tem Joe Garcia will serve as chair-elect.
“2025 looks to be a transformational year as many of the plans and priorities the board has put in place in 2024 will start to take life and create lasting change for our region,” said Judge Knight.
In addition to announcing the 2025 board officers at the annual meeting, Wemple recognized outgoing Board Chair Sallie Alcorn, city of Houston councilmember. H-GAC released its annual report and videos highlighting the agency’s most significant accomplishments of 2024, which can be viewed at: h-gac.com/about.
“I am immensely proud of the work H-GAC accomplished in 2024,” said Alcorn. “From the vantage point of serving as board chair, I have a greater appreciation for all the good work H-GAC does to improve the quality of life in our region. For the vital work they accomplish from childcare, adult education, public safety, workforce development, and small business loans, H-GAC knows how to get the job done.”
The H-GAC board of directors comprises 37 local elected officials representing 13 counties, 111 cities, and 11 school districts. The board leads collaborative efforts with local governments. The regional planning organization considers regional issues in solving area-wide challenges for various programs, such as transportation planning, rural 9-1-1 services, workforce development, aging and disability resources, and disaster and recovery programs.
