FM 517 Widening and Access Management
Brazoria County
FM 517
Galveston County Line, SH 35
The proposed project is needed to improve mobility in Brazoria and Galveston Counties and to improve safety by providing a divided roadway. The proposed roadway would provide additional capacity for traffic traversing this quickly growing part of the county. The project area is projected to see particularly strong growth, particularly within the City of Alvin. Galveston County, as well as the cities of Dickinson and League City, show moderate projected growth.
The proposed improvements to FM 517 from SH 35 to I-45 include widening the existing facility to four lanes with two 12-foot-wide travel lanes in each direction with curb and gutter; between FM 646 and I-45 the improvements include an 18-foot-wide raised median with turn lanes. The facility would also have 14-foot-wide shoulders and 5-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides of the roadway.
The purpose of the proposed project is to accommodate future anticipated traffic demand and growth in the region, as well as improve safety and mobility by constructing a divided roadway with raised medians. Congestion is anticipated to lessen due to access changes to adjacent residences and businesses via the creation of openings in the raised medians at select locations and intersections. The roadway improvements would accommodate anticipated future growth in the region by adding needed additional capacity while providing accommodations for bicyclists and pedestrians through the construction of shared-use lanes and sidewalks.
