The West Fork of the San Jacinto River and its tributary Lake Creek are primary sources of water for the Lake Houston reservoir. Assessments of surface water indicate elevated levels of fecal bacteria in these waterways as well as depressed dissolved oxygen, elevated levels of nitrogen and phosphorous compounds, and poor conditions for macrobenthic communities. The West Fork Watersheds Partnership developed a WPP that was approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 2019 and is currently being implemented.
